Lale's Bio

An experienced mathematics professor, Lale holds several degrees: a BS in mathematics from Bulent Ecevit University (in Türkiye); an MS in mathematics education from Marmara University (in Türkiye); and a PhD in mathematics from Texas Tech University. Lale has over thirteen years of teaching across diverse educational settings. She specializes in adapting her approach to meet each student's unique needs, helping them develop a deep understanding and appreciation for mathematics.

In addition to tutoring math, Lale serves as an Assistant Professor of Computational Mathematics. Lale is the recipient of the Provost Legacy Award, given to faculty members who have demonstrated a high degree of dedication to their craft as educators in their first five years of service at the university.

Since completing her undergraduate studies, Lale has dedicated her career to mathematics education and research. “My journey began in cram high schools, where I honed my skills in teaching math and geometry, focusing on exam prep and targeted instruction,” Lale explains. Throughout her career, Lale has strived to adapt her teaching approach to meet the diverse needs of students across all levels. “My goal has always been not just to help students solve problems, but to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of mathematics,” she explains. “I believe in breaking down complex ideas, nurturing problem-solving skills, and building mathematical confidence in my students.” As such, Lale’s tutoring style is adaptive, student-centered, and focused on building a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Lale’s teaching and tutoring experience is vast; she has taught all levels of math from middle school to college level, including algebra, pre-calculus through calculus 3, mathematical modeling, data science, and more. As a tutor, she has also taught SAT and ACT prep and is known for helping students achieve significant test score improvements and increased academic confidence.

“What I love most about teaching and tutoring is the ability to make a tangible difference in students' lives,” Lale says. “There's an unparalleled joy in witnessing a student's growth—not just in their mathematical abilities, but in their confidence and problem-solving skills. I find it incredibly rewarding to guide students from a place of uncertainty or even fear of mathematics to a point where they can approach problems with confidence and enthusiasm.” Lale is also passionate about the challenges that teaching presents. She notes that every student is unique, with their own learning style, strengths, and areas for improvement; this diversity requires her to constantly adapt and refine her teaching methods. “Working with students often leads to fresh perspectives and novel approaches to problems,” Lale says.

As a student, Lale participated in the book club, math club, and chess club. Outside of work, she is passionate about exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and learning theory. Additionally, she enjoys staying active and spending time outdoors. “Whether it’s hiking, cycling, or simply exploring new places, I find that being in nature provides a refreshing break from the demands of academia,” she says.

Lale also has a strong interest in community service and educational outreach. “A fun fact about me is that I once turned a casual game of chess with a friend into a spontaneous lesson on game theory, complete with probability calculations and strategic analysis,” Lale says. “By the end of it, my friend jokingly claimed they had earned a math degree! It’s moments like these that remind me how much I love blending math with everyday life.”
