PrepNow Tutor - Spencer C.
A tutor who loves to learn and make an impact on his students, Spencer holds a BS in neuroscience from Florida State University and will be pursuing his MD at Barry College of Medicine. He’s currently taking a gap year to tutor and work in a medical clinic.
Spencer started tutoring in 2018 when he was in college and worked as a teaching assistant for his biology and chemistry courses. “I love watching a student who struggles and lacks confidence in a subject understand and become confident in that subject,” he says. “Seeing a student’s transformation is my favorite part of teaching.” Over the years, Spencer has taught math at the elementary level up to calculus and science at the high school and college levels, including biology, anatomy, and physics.
Spencer’s tutoring style is rooted in having a conversation. “I try to focus on talking through problems. The main reason I do this is because I think it's the best way for a student to gain long-term knowledge and not just learn a specific problem,” he explains. “I also tutor in a Q-and-A style because it allows me to assess that the student is actually processing the information that I am presenting to them." Spencer is always patient and never pressures his students when something doesn't click, recognizing that sometimes it takes comprehending something new several times for a concept to break through.
As a student, Spencer practiced Jiu-Jitsu and played soccer. He was on the honor roll in college and worked in the Alzheimer's research lab at the Florida State College of Medicine, where he helped publish scientific research. He enjoys golfing and going to the beach and he’s currently pursuing a pilot's license. “I have a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,” Spencer shares.
