Mariam's Bio

Mariam’s expertise includes K-12 math (algebra, geometry, and problem-solving), reading comprehension, grammar, and science. Regarding the SAT and ACT, she focuses on key topics like algebra, geometry, data analysis, critical reading, and English language conventions.

She earned a bachelor’s in international relations with a minor in African studies from the University of Washington. She also holds a bachelor’s in economics with a minor in Spanish. In addition to tutoring, she’s an aspiring lawyer and a project manager for a USAID education project in Kenya.

Mariam’s tutoring journey began in her hometown of Seattle, where she worked with kids who grew up in the same neighborhoods as she did. She sees the relationship between tutor and tutee as a two-way street; “I love when my students have enough faith in me and in their ability to understand something that they ask for help,” she says. “The students with questions always warm my heart.”

Her tailored, patient approach gives students the tools to break down complex concepts and build confidence. “My goal is to make learning approachable,” she says. She uses various strategies like hands-on practice, visual aids, and concrete steps. “I also prioritize creating a positive and encouraging environment to help students stay motivated and reach their full potential,” she adds. Ultimately, she wants each student to exceed their expectations while feeling supported and empowered in their learning journey.

First in her family to go to college, she’s proud of her many achievements, including the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which she earned six times! As a former wealth management advisor for a major financial institution, she’s also proud to hold multiple certifications (Series 7, 63, and 66).

During high school and college, Mariam served as editor of her high school yearbook and swam competitively, which sharpened her “discipline, perseverance, and commitment to excellence.” In college, she organized events and resources for African diaspora communities and participated in published studies on poverty reduction. She also enjoyed hiking and any outdoor activities with friends.

Her passion for exploring cultures, education, and food has taken her to fifteen different countries. Her trilingual skills have come in handy!

Fun—fortuitous—fact: her family won lottery loot when she was one year old!
