PrepNow Tutor - Charis H.
A creative, analytical thinker, Charis has several years of experience as an associate math teacher and tutor, specializing in middle and high school math (algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus I & II, and linear algebra). A zealous dancer who has performed with Providence Ballet Theatre, Kairos Dance Theater, and Ten31 Productions, she has also taught dance (ballet) for ages 5 through adults at two different dance schools since 2022.
Charis earned a BS in both mathematics and dance from Muhlenberg College, where she was on the dean’s list all four years and graduated summa cum laude.
She began tutoring in high school when a guidance counselor asked her to help a fellow student in chemistry. “My proudest moment as a tutor came at the end of my first semester as a peer tutor in college, when my tutee gave me a card thanking me for helping her and told me that she had done so well in the class that the professor had even recommended her to become a tutor the following semester. It really showed me that I had helped someone reach their potential,” she recalls.
Charis takes a comprehensive, confidence-focused approach. “I focus on helping the student establish a strong foundation and then building confidence from there because I find that students who do not possess this confidence will either endlessly second-guess themselves or give up on a problem too soon,” she explains. She’s adept at deciphering knowledge gaps and crafting sessions that employ each student’s strengths to ultimately address any weaknesses. “I try to guide students towards figuring things out for themselves instead of just telling them what to do every step of the way,” she adds.
At Muhlenberg College, Charis earned the Robert W. and Edythe M. Mull Award for Excellence in Mathematics (awarded to the junior with the highest math grades) in 2021 and the Miriam E. Koehler Award for Excellence in Mathematics (awarded to the sophomore with the highest math grades) in 2020. She’s also proud to share that she graduated as high school valedictorian.
Outside of work, she enjoys expressing herself in the dance studio. “Dance has been a big part of my life ever since I was little, and I'm not planning on stopping any time soon! I genuinely love all styles of dance, but my focus is on contemporary,” she shares. She’s also an avid reader and a huge fan of figure skating, as well as her orange cat, Daisy.
