Jordan's Bio

Jordan is a PhD, teacher, composer, musicologist, organist, and bagpiper who writes concert music that is performed around the world. "I believe," he says "that changing the world begins by asking better questions, and it is the role of teachers to show our children the questions that we ardently need to be asking of our leaders and societies." While Jordan has extensive background teaching and tutoring mathematics, music, German, writing and SAT/ACT prep, he also composes routinely and has been "composer in residence" all over the United States and Canada. He has co-founded a school that aims to bring better, more affordable, cross-disciplinary, research-oriented, socially minded education to all socioeconomic classes. Additionally, Jordan has experience working with learning-challenged students.

Curiosity and learning should not be a one-way path from the teacher to the student, but a critical dialogue that better helps the student to understand how and why they think what they think, in order to hone their powers of critical thinking. In one-on-one tutoring, Jordan generally follows a Socratic method; rather than tell them the answers, he talks to the student, asks them the reasoning behind their answers, walks them through the logic of their decisions, helps them to reassess that logic, and teaches them to teach themselves.

Outside of his musical and artistic career, Jordan speaks publicly at universities and high schools about disability and LGBTQ+ advocacy in education and the arts. The NSF also awarded Jordan a STEAM (Science+Art) Education grant, which goes to artists with math and science backgrounds and is intended for artistic educational outreach.

In high school, Jordan did musical theater, but it was his love of video games and anime that began his musical composition career. He also ran track and field, and continues running to this day. He is known globally for his new system of rhythmic notation. In his spare time, Jordan works as a freelance graphic designer and runs a small family farm.
