PrepNow Tutor - Solomon S.

Driven and compassionate, Solomon brings a myriad of unique experiences to the table as an educator. He has worked with students of various abilities, ages, and backgrounds. He earned a BS in honors biochemistry and computer science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he tutored peers and underclassmen as part of the chemistry department’s Science Learning Center. He addressed various topics in STEM, including physical chemistry, physics, and organic chemistry. He also taught introductory chemistry courses under the supervision of two of U of M’s esteemed professors. In addition to tutoring, he works as a clinical research coordinator and hopes to pursue medical school.
From 2019 to 2022, he tutored high schoolers in English as part of the Detroit Education Society. During the pandemic, he tutored historically underserved students remotely via an online English language arts program. A second-generation Korean American who has also studied Spanish, he has experience tutoring and translating Spanish to English.
Solomon started teaching as a means to provide outreach to his local community. A major bonus for him is that “tutoring has since helped hone my ability to communicate and allows me to stay fresh in reviewing academic content,” he shares. His proudest moment: helping a student not only develop the drive to study but also increase their grade in organic chemistry significantly!
Solomon’s strategy is structured around each student. “I like to listen to my students' needs and try to go at their pace, making goals and progressing towards them,” he shares. A big part of his practice is to help build good study habits so they can grow into lifelong learners. “My philosophy towards teaching is going into great depth with content so my tutees can gain a holistic understanding rather than utilize rote memorization techniques,” he says. “Ideally, I like to ensure that students learn once, teach once, and do once, gaining full depth of understanding.
As a student, he was a varsity athlete in alpine ski racing, track and field, cross country, and baseball. His stellar academic performance also earned him a Roger B. Vanko award, which recognizes excellence in chemistry and biochemistry.
In his free time, he loves running, reading, and playing video games to unwind. He’s also into coding and programming. “I work on open-source projects and coding problems,” he adds.
