Tharshikka's Bio

Tharsikka is a decorated scholar and educator. She holds several degrees: a BSc in civil engineering from the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka; an MS in civil engineering from Clemson University; and a PhD in civil engineering, also from Clemson University. Her research interests focus on innovative construction materials and environmentally responsible solutions for civil infrastructure. As she has progressed in her field, she has been honored with multiple grants to support her research and was awarded the Outstanding Academician Award of the Year from Women Icon in 2024 for her contributions to teaching and research.
Tharsikka began teaching in graduate school, working as a teaching and lab assistant in engineering. She has also been a tutor of AP Physics Mechanics and college-level physics courses and a tutor for high-school students in algebra, geometry, and general math skills. Finally, since 2022, she has been a civil engineering assistant professor at Louisville University, offering courses such as statics, environmental engineering, construction project management, construction materials, sustainability, and mechanics of materials.
Tharsikka describes her teaching and tutoring style as student-centered, interactive, and focused on building strong fundamentals. In addition, her instructional experience has taught her the lasting impact of patience, encouragement, and effective teaching. She says, “My philosophy is to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and growing from them.” In such an environment, she posits, students are more apt to develop lasting critical thinking skills and confidence, ensuring that they carry what they learn to future challenges.
Thinking back to high school, Tharsikka recalls fondly her days as a track athlete; she competed in discus, shot put, and high jump. In college, her interests shifted a bit, and she took up badminton and volleyball casually and competed officially in table tennis. These days, she is still very active and enjoys hiking and exploring caves with friends. Tharsikka also loves to challenge others to board games.
