Ryan's Bio

Ryan is a trained physicist who is working to complete a doctoral degree in educational studies and become a full-time professor in his field. He holds a BS in physics from the University of Dayton and an MA in physics from the University of Cincinnati. As he pursued his own education, Ryan quickly learned that he wanted to adapt his love of science to the classroom. As such, along the way, he has accrued years of experience teaching high school and college students. At the high-school level, he has taught AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism. At the college level, he has taught general education physics, physics in society, physics in sports, physics for engineers, and physics for nurses.
Ryan believes that learning is a learned skill; that is, whether a student is confronted with advanced physics or standardized testing, the student must first take on their task and risk failure. Indeed, according to Ryan, “Learning is what happens in those little moments of not knowing – and struggling with such moments is not a bad thing, because by struggling, we establish new knowledge bases and skills.” Thus, he works to help students incrementally construct new plateaus and encourages them to realize the benefit of struggle and frustration. He has even seen that many students come to find a kind of excitement in struggle, as they know it can lead them to new heights.
Ryan, himself, loves competition of all forms. In high school, this pushed him to play point guard on the basketball team and center back for the soccer squad. He has also always loved to game, and among his favorite platforms is online Pokemon battling. At one point, he reached a ranking as high as number 18 in the world, and he still likes the challenge of the game. In addition, he also boasts an impressive ranking in “bullet chess,” a version of speed-chess in which a player’s clock is set to only one minute. All of this competition aside, Ryan also relishes the time he gets to spend with his wife – they have traveled to many countries all over the world, and Ryan, the house chef, likes to bring back and perfect recipes from their travels.
