PrepNow Tutor - Joy V.
Joy graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in mathematics. While in college, she served as a teaching assistant for a Calculus II class. Finding that she loved teaching, she went on to earn her master of arts in teaching secondary education from National Louis University. While pursuing her graduate degree, she student taught and gained experience working with ESL students and students with learning differences. She now works as a high school math teacher and interventionist and has taught math courses ranging from pre-algebra and geometry to algebra II and pre-calculus. In addition to her teaching experience, Joy also has experience tutoring AP Statistics and AP Calculus and preparing students for the ACT and SAT.
Joy takes a student-centered approach to teaching and tutoring. She enjoys loosely guiding her students, giving them space to take what they know and what she's taught them to try solving problems on their own. Through this approach, her students not only have the benefit of her input and insight, but also gain confidence and experience from working through and solving problems on their own.
Outside of tutoring, Joy's interests include health and fitness. She runs almost every day and practices yoga, a pastime that she finds relaxes and prepares her for the day. She has a pet Chihuahua who she enjoys taking on walks, and she's also a big sports fan.
