PrepNow Tutor - Jacinda R.

A versatile tutor, Jacinda earned her BA in psychology and dance from Northwestern University. Since graduating in 2015, she has tutored, bar tended, taught dance, and worked as a freelance dancer, choreographer, and actor. Several years ago, Jacinda started tutoring at the request of a parent whose son was struggling in math. “We worked together for years and I found it extremely rewarding to watch his knowledge grow,” Jacinda says. She eventually worked with several of his classmates and found she loved the challenge of puzzling out their different learning styles. “I really enjoy working one-on-one to get to know my students as individuals and understand how their mind works,” she says. Jacinda has tutored geometry, algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, chemistry, physics, and test prep.
When asked about her teaching philosophy, Jacinda shares, “I have always been very fascinated by the human mind and understanding the way people think. I find my approach to tutoring starts there; I have my bag of tools for teaching but, for the first few lessons, I am also focused on learning the student. While we're going over the material, I'm trying to understand how their mind came to the conclusion (correct or incorrect), and from there, figure out how to teach it.” As Jacinda better understands the student’s approach, she alters her tutoring methods to match them. She believes this level of personalization is extremely important in education.
In high school, Jacinda practiced ballet and tap dance. She participated in theatre, was the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, and a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and Thespian Honor Society. In college, Jacinda was heavily involved in campus dance companies and clubs, as well as theatre. She enjoys hiking, watching movies, traveling, and cooking. She loves the mountains and the city equally. “Every year between Thanksgiving and New Years, I watch the classic 2003 film Love Actually at least ten times,” Jacinda says.
