PrepNow Tutor - Amelia C.
Amelia earned her bachelor’s in psychology and human development at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and she continued on at the same school to complete her master’s and doctoral degrees in behavioral neuroscience. Amelia earned many accolades, such as the “Fall Graduate Lecturer Award,” the “Graduate Student Peer Mentor Award,” a WISCIENCE (“Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement”) teaching fellowship, and a Community of Graduate Research Scholars (CGRS) fellowship.
Amelia’s introduction to tutoring occurred as an undergraduate student. She has experience tutoring high school students in a wealth of subjects, such as math, biology, general life sciences, anatomy, English, psychology, and SAT/ACT prep. In addition, she has taught the following college subjects: neuroscience, biology, zoology, psychology and behavioral neuroscience. As a high school student, Amelia served as a camp counselor, and she taught outdoor education to campers. She believes that this experience enabled the smooth transition into teaching academics.
When asked about her approach to working with students, Amelia said that she identifies most closely “with Lev Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development.” This zone represents the gap between what a student can do on his/her own and what s/he can accomplish with guidance from an adult or in collaboration with more proficient peers. This assistance will usually provide the support necessary to lead the student through the zone of proximal development and complete the task. While Amelia realizes that this approach takes more time, she feels it “is worth it, as each student is unique and has different needs.”
In high school, Amelia participated in cross country and track and field. During her college years, Amelia played ultimate frisbee, and she still continues to play for a women’s semi-professional team out of New York. These days, Amelia enjoys working out, lifting weights, cooking, hiking, and camping. Fun fact: Amelia has a dog named Bailey who accompanies her on her hiking and camping trips, and Bailey also likes to follow Amelia around in the kitchen when she is cooking, too!
