PrepNow Tutor - Alexa S.
Lexy is devoted to helping others become more efficient learners and has worked with students of all ages in courses like English language arts, reading, science, math, Spanish, and ecology. Throughout her career, she has worked as a substitute teacher, graduate TA, tutor, and teaching aid.
Lexy graduated from Texas A&M University with a BS in marine biology. As an undergraduate, she acted as a student advocate in a family literacy program, which focused on giving active, innovative education programs that integrated science, math, art, reading, and technology (SMART). She also holds an MS in biological sciences from the University of Notre Dame, where she worked with hundreds of students as a graduate teaching assistant.
Since finishing her master's in 2022, she treks to the most remote areas of Alaska as a field ecologist and researcher. She is also a leader in the research station’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts, enhancing recruitment methods of underrepresented people in STEM and improving science communication via social media presence. In addition to tutoring and arctic ecological research, she’s a substitute teacher for Northside ISD (the second-largest ISD in Texas).
Lexy describes her tutoring style as “fun and patient.” She’s quick to assess any learning gaps and adapts to meet her students’ needs. She sees herself as a mentor, working to help students reach specific academic and professional goals. Ultimately, she wants her students to be more proficient, passionate learners. “Helping students become more confident in their own abilities comes first,” she notes. She loves witnessing the growth that takes place when students become more comfortable with a concept that once threw them for a loop!
In high school, Lexy’s intellectual prowess earned her the Terry Foundation Scholarship, which gave her a full ride to Texas A&M University. As a graduate student, she won the GEM Associate Fellowship, which focused on promoting opportunities and increasing the participation of underrepresented groups. Her academic excellence in STEM fields also earned her the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Scholar Award (funded by the National Science Foundation), which supports historically underrepresented students in STEM.
In addition to helping students become more effective learners, she is passionate about social justice and increasing access, opportunities, and visibility of underrepresented groups in STEM. At Notre Dame, she held many leadership positions ranging from president of the Latinx Graduate Association at Notre Dame (ND) to co-founder of the Graduate Students Against Racial Injustice Organization.
In her spare time, she loves hiking, exploring national parks, and traveling. She’s also fond of karaoke, hot yoga, and dancing. Having started scuba diving at age 13, she is a certified diver!
