PrepNow Tutor - Chethan K.
Chethan has copious experience teaching and tutoring test prep for the SAT and ACT. He has also taught math, English, and study skills to help students with time management and overall efficiency. He received a BA in government and international politics from George Mason University (GMU), where, the following year, he also earned an MA in political science. Chethan has been teaching and tutoring ever since and, as of 2021, he has been teaching astrobiology and algebra at The New School of Northern Virginia.
Chethan has also pursued a number of other interests, including building educational workshops on watershed health and stormwater runoff management, organizing five multi-day music festivals, and doing sound and stage tech for the Capitol Steps (a political satire group that disbanded in 2020). He has been a part-time musician for most of his life. "I have played in a few musical projects," he says. "And some have performed and recorded enough to get low-power radio play!"
In 2005, Chethan got his start teaching 5th and 6th grade English at a private summer school. "I was quickly given more classes as I showed my enthusiasm and ability for teaching," he explains. For his classroom test prep work, Chethan was awarded Teacher of the Year.
Chethan emphasizes teamwork with his students. "My energy tends towards energetic, whimsical, and irreverent," he shares. "I try to show my students simple ways to remember rules, methodically work through strategies, and move past confusing explanations so that we can find the simplest, most efficient, and hopefully most broadly useful approaches to succeeding." His sense of humor allows him to build authentic rapport. "I remember being a student fairly well and I work with students almost daily, so I generally work to empathize with their situations," he offers. He makes a point to check in with his students at the start of each session to create a relaxed learning environment.
In high school, Chethan ran track and played guitar in the school band. In college, he was a canvasser. In his free time, he enjoys facilitating Dungeons & Dragons. He admits he also loves entertaining his cat!
