PrepNow Tutor - Velita C.

Velita had dreamed of being a teacher since she was young, and as of 2024, she has been a middle school teacher for the past 27 years! She has taught special education, math (algebra, geometry, and trigonometry), science, and language arts at middle school and college levels. She received a BS and certificate in interrelated special education from North Georgia College & State University. Additionally, she earned a master's of education in behavior and learning disabilities from Georgia State University. Nationally board-certified in mathematics, Velita also holds a middle-grade (4th through 8th) educator certificate in math, science, language arts, and special education.
"I have dreamed of being a teacher since I was young. In college, I completed a practicum at a local middle school and I have loved working with middle schoolers ever since," she declares. For the first 20 years of her teaching career, she taught special education, namely the fields of language arts, science, and math. As of 2024, she teaches general education math and science; she has also taught developmental math at a community college.
Focusing on process over product, Velita guides students as they think through a problem or skill instead of simply giving them answers. "I use questions such as 'why' or 'how' to help students use their higher level thinking and problem-solving skills to work through a skill as they learn," she offers. Her favorite thing about teaching is watching a student understand a concept for the first time and seeing the pride that they feel in that moment.
In high school, Velita played violin. Currently, she enjoys nature and exploring new places. "I also have a sweet dog and an energetic cat who provide much entertainment and joy," she reveals.
