Brittany's Bio

Tenacious, versatile, and conscientious, Brittany has been teaching and tutoring high school math (pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry), English, social studies, and science since 2017; she also has extensive experience with standardized test prep. Brittany received two degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte: a BA in history education and an MEd in curriculum and instruction. She is currently a doctoral candidate in curriculum and instruction at her alma mater; additionally, at UNC-Charlotte, she is working on a certificate in quantitative data, which focuses heavily on statistics and calculus. On top of her schooling, she is also teaching 9th-grade English.

Brittany has worn many hats in the realm of education. She taught high school social studies, English, and even PE; coordinated standardized testing while learning the vicissitudes of the testing process; hosted a slew of student teachers in her classroom; mentored new teachers; and, lastly, tutored students one-on-one in all high school topics.

Brittany enjoys getting to know her students; as a result, students feel comfortable expressing their struggles and asking questions. "I think it is important to remember that the student is the center of all things education and they deserve to have a voice in what they are academically exposed to," she proclaims. She puts extra time into planning lessons that fit her students' various interests. For instance, if a student expresses they'd like to read dystopian fiction, she does heavy research into something that might fit the bill. Finding ways to get students interested—and keep them interested—in learning is her forte! "I have a passion for helping others succeed academically and find their passion in life," she adds.

Regarding test prep, her approach is patient and diligent. "I like to follow the 'I do, we do, you do' model so that the student knows how a strategy works," she explains. For math questions, she opts for a combination of modeling and guiding questions. "This way I can determine their confidence and if they understand key mathematical vocabulary," she clarifies. Ultimately, she wants her students to have a strong foundation and the self-assurance to apply difficult concepts in new ways.

Brittany's teaching prowess won her the title of Teacher of the Year at Aspire Trade High School. At UNC, she is an Urban Education Collaborative Doctoral Fellow.

In high school, Brittany was part of Teacher Cadets and Future Teachers of America. In college, she was in the Sigma Kappa sorority. These days, she enjoys knitting, reading, building Lego sets, and playing with her dog, Skyline. "I am also a huge Harry Potter fan!"
