Taban has experience teaching math (particularly algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and probability) to students of various levels. She earned a BSc in public health with a minor in documentary filmmaking from Rutgers University, New Brunswick; she later earned an MSPH in health education and health communication from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Throughout her undergraduate career, she worked with kids in math and English at a local tutoring center. After graduating, she spent one year working as a program coordinator at the New Jersey Hospital Association, where she led collaborative projects and workshops for healthcare staff statewide. She has also worked as a program specialist at the American Hospital Association in Chicago, specifically regarding the Health Services Research Journal. “In all of my work experience, my focus has always been to find ways to improve health education in all platforms,” she says.
Having volunteered in her mother’s classroom, she was exposed to the joy that comes from seeing students develop confidence in their own ideas and abilities. Seeing their improvement motivated her to stay curious about how she can help students in myriad ways.
Her tutoring style is adaptive and highly tailored. “I like to see where they are and how they are thinking first. We then walk through the steps together using the knowledge they have,” she explains. Her approach uses the student's strengths to boost their weaknesses. She makes a devoted effort to come prepared with several strategies to understand questions, apply new techniques, and solve problems.
In 2014, Taban’s academic performance earned her access to Eta Sigma Gamma, a National Health Education honors association. While working toward her minor in documentary filmmaking, one of her films won an honorary mention for the Margery Somers Foster Award.
In her free time, she loves learning new skills like knitting. “Fun fact: you need to be good at math if you want to knit a nicely fitted scarf or sweater!” She also enjoys storytelling, especially as a fun way to entertain and educate her two young children.
