Eric's Bio

Relaxed and results-focused, Eric has experience tutoring English, history, and philosophy at the high school and college levels. His experience teaching high school English and history allowed him to finesse his approach to be especially accessible and effective for students with learning disabilities. “I have worked with students who have ADHD, autism, and generalized learning disabilities, and I foster a safe environment for these students to learn without feeling pressured or self-confident about their abilities,” he shares.

Eric earned a bachelor’s in philosophy and minors in political science, writing rhetoric, and technical communication from James Madison University, where he specialized in Asian and Chinese philosophy and graduated with honors. He later earned a master’s in philosophy from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Since graduating, he has worked as a copywriter, high school English teacher, IT specialist, and philosophy instructor at Front Range Community College.

He is proud to witness students develop authentic confidence in their skills, particularly with concepts they’d formerly struggled with. “Seeing someone who doubted they could do something succeed despite that is special,” he shares. He recently helped a student jump several letter grades on assignments “by helping develop planning skills and overcoming perfectionist tendencies.”

Eric describes his approach as “support-driven.” He likes to provide tools and guided encouragement so each student can “experience themselves succeeding.” His background in philosophy has shown him the value of critical thinking and self-evaluation skills; his approach aims to train those cerebral muscles just as much as the material at hand. “These skills provide the bedrock for learning in general, and as such, I believe create stronger and more skilled students.”

His passion and excellence in philosophy earned him a membership in the honor society Phi Sigma Tau. In high school, he swam and played in both band and marching band. In college, he continued playing music as part of the symphonic band. He was also on the editorial board of a research journal and founded a fraternity chapter of Kappa Delta Rho. In graduate school, he was a teaching and research assistant, IT specialist, and Buddhism reading group leader.

Eric is a published poet as well as a painter, board gamer, baseball fan, and video game enthusiast. He’s also fond of traveling and has a charm from the Shinto temple in Japan, which is only open to the public once every fifteen years!
