PrepNow Tutor - Sam S.

Sam is a hard-working teacher who is passionate about helping all students succeed. “I love to work one-on-one with students to increase their confidence in any educational skills,” Sam says. “I believe in building strong relationships, fostering curiosity, and creating inclusive, student-centered learning environments.” Sam holds a BA in Italian and an MA in TESOL from the University of Rhode Island, as well as a K-12 teaching certificate from Providence College. Since earning her master’s degree, Sam has been working as a middle school Italian and Spanish teacher.
While Sam started formally teaching in 2020, she has been tutoring since 2017. “My proudest moment as a teacher is when I conduct the foreign language oral interviews for high school students in our district,” Sam says. “Seeing my students all grown up and proficient in the language, receiving recognition and induction into the World Language Honor Society for their achievements is always wonderful to see.” In addition to her expertise in teaching languages, Sam has thorough experience in other areas. She has tutored test prep as well as math up to calculus (with analytic geometry); and while in her master's program, she taught reading and writing.
“My teaching style is flexible and focused on the student's needs,” Sam says. “My priority is to meet students where they are and build on their strengths while improving their weaknesses.” Sam is flexible so that she can adjust to students' learning styles and backgrounds. She recognizes that it’s extremely important to make students feel safe, supported, and engaged through active learning. “My main teaching philosophy is rooted in culturally responsive teaching, which is recognizing and utilizing students' unique backgrounds and perspectives so they feel supported and acknowledged.”
As a student, Sam ran track and received numerous awards for her strong studies and high scores. She plays softball for an LGBTQ adult league and likes to sing, play board games, and hang out with her dog. Sam is the president of the Rhode Island Teachers of Italian. “I sing in an acoustic duo with a fellow teacher, and we are called Two Tired Teachers!”
