An outgoing teacher who loves to learn, Audrey is a passionate mathematics enthusiast. She holds a BA in elementary education with a focus on mathematics from Oakland University as well as a Michigan Teaching Certificate. Audrey started her professional journey just before the pandemic, gaining valuable leadership experience in retail management before returning to her passion for education. She now works in a Great Start Readiness Program classroom in Southeast Michigan, where she helps young learners build foundational skills.
“I started tutoring as a way to engage the minds of some older students and provide extra support that some learners so desperately need,” Audrey says. “But I discovered my gift for teaching when all throughout high school, friends would ask me for help and advice on our homework and before exams. I later cultivated my teaching skills in college.” Audrey has several years of experience teaching third graders and one year of experience with preschoolers. She has also tutored high school students in mathematics and, for over fifteen years, has taught all grades of religious education at a local church. “I want every student to find something fun about our sessions,” Audrey says. “The entire thing won't be fun and games, but I want my students to explore something novel or enjoy the experience of learning rather than rote memorization.”
Audrey’s teaching style is relaxed with firm boundaries. She notes that learning should be a fun challenge. “I strive to take time to build the base before we start stacking the skyscraper of knowledge up,” she says. “I'm here to support any level of learner at any point in their journey to grow from where they are to where they could go and who they could become.” She’s particularly excited about tutoring test prep. “I have always been a 'good test taker' and I am excited to engage with some new learners and share my tips and tricks to stay cool while getting through these exams,” she says. “Extra exposure and practice tests take some of the fear of the unknown out of any exam or upcoming test; so to be able to ease those anxieties and prepare students to do their best on these exams is something I'm passionate and excited about as an educator. Tests are meant to assess progress and knowledge and are something to be excited for, not in fear of.”
As a student, Audrey was a part of various honors societies, including Alpha Lambda Delta and Kappa Delta Pi, and she received a President's Award. She played basketball in her freshman year and was very passionate about theatre and choir classes.
“The circus is my main hobby,” Audrey says. “I love to practice and watch any circus acts I can. I also try to stay active when I can. I can juggle and ride a unicycle!”
