PrepNow Tutor - Sloane M.

A tutor since 2019, Sloane is passionate about helping her students juggle high-level work and testing to prepare for college. She holds a BA in English from the University of South Carolina and an MAT from the University of Memphis. Sloane has been teaching English language arts since 2021, instructing ninth, tenth, and eleventh-grade English classes at the grade level and pre-AP level plus honors classes.
"I've always had a passion for learning, and the desire to share my knowledge with others has been a constant in my life,” Sloane says. “Every job I've ever held has been teaching, tutoring, or child care, but my proudest moments have been conversing with students in my ELA or Yearbook classes.” In addition to working as a classroom teacher, Sloane has tutored English, biology, and Spanish through the Upward Bound TRiO Program and Peer Power Foundation. She’ll be teaching seventh grade for the first time in fall 2025. Sloane is also deeply familiar with test prep, as all her students in ninth and tenth grade took mandated state tests.
"My teaching style is student-led and teacher-structured,” Sloane explains. “I center my approach around student discourse and discussion, as well as meeting students where they are and helping them grow from there. I prefer restorative justice practices when it comes to managing student behavior, and believe preserving student-teacher relationships is a high priority.” One of Sloane’s major philosophies is that teachers need to be teaching students not just discrete skills or content, but the skills that come with being a lifelong learner. “The desire to learn is an innate human quality, so fostering academic and cultural curiosity in students is a primary goal of mine as an educator,” she says.
During her schooling, Sloane was an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Recipient and participated in honor societies, volunteer programs, Scholastic Writing Competition, and yearbook. She’s a writer and artist in her free time and enjoys fiction writing, drawing, painting, and crafting. She also loves reading and recently got into audiobooks. “I like to travel, but I'm a road-trip fan rather than a jet-setter.” Sloane has made numerous paintings of Snoopy and other Peanuts characters because they're fun and simple to draw, making them super therapeutic and relaxing subjects.
