PrepNow Tutor - Abdel A.

Abdel is a research scientist with a focus on computational physics. His main focus is on designing software that models the physical world with the intent of improving the engineering process. He holds a BSE in electrical and computer engineering and a PhD in the same field from Michigan State University. As he pursued this training for his engineering career, Abdel also became an energetic tutor. As an undergraduate student in 2016, Abdel gained his first tutoring experience, helping peers in computer programming. In graduate school, Abdel went on to become a teaching assistant in electromagnetic fields and waves, coursework that required not only that he tutor in engineering but also in algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, and differential equations. Having now established himself in his engineering career, Abdel is excited to return to tutoring here at StudyPoint.
Abdel’s tutoring style is bent upon helping students to develop their own unique learning approaches. He does so by making sure that his teaching and the material are accessible to students and that the students can make personalized, meaningful associations. He also helps students to understand concepts beyond surface-level answers, allowing students to be more adaptive. As one example, math students are often taught to memorize methods for solving rational functions. Abdel, of course, teaches the students how to do this, but he also questions them, for example, about the impact of things such as asymptotes or shared factors between numerators and denominators. This forces students to understand the nature of the functions themselves. He says, “By focusing on how the algebra influences the shapes and behaviors of graphs, students learn to predict the functions’ graphs even before plotting points. This builds intuition, which leads to confidence in learning more advanced topics.” As such, Abdel always seeks to enable students to learn past his tutoring.
When Abdel was himself a burgeoning high-school student, he wrestled in four weight classes and played as a pass-first point-forward for the basketball team. He has also played chess since he was in elementary school, and he cautions you that his three knights open in pretty polished.
These days, when not testing new gambits on the chess board, Abdel can likely be found with a reel and rod in his hand: he enjoys fishing (mostly for walleye and bass), and he would love to get back out on a frozen river in upcoming winters to try to land his first fish on the ice.
