PrepNow Tutor - Emma B.
Emma has been tutoring for over six years and has extensive experience with all math topics plus test prep and AP exams. She has a BS in mathematics, with a minor in statistics, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She also has completed advanced coursework at George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College. "Since I graduated, I have been spending time with family, traveling, and tutoring. I will be starting my master's at George Mason University in fall 2025," she shares.
Emma got her start tutoring at a math learning center, and has worked on math tutoring with students from middle school math to college level. Moreover, Emma also has experience in physics and college admissions tutoring, as well as exam prep with individual students, for the SAT, math exams, and AP exams. Her breadth of math tutoring is extensive, with experience in the following: pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, statistics, pre-calculus, calculus, advanced calculus, and more.
Emma's proudest teaching moments are always when a student gains confidence and knows that they can master the material. "When a student has that 'aha' moment and finally gets a concept, or when they tell me they don't need my help on a problem anymore, those moments make me proud," she shares.
Emma describes her tutoring style as very student-led. "I want to support my students, but also empower them to be able to learn and succeed when I'm not there, by building up not only their knowledge but also their independent learning skills," she says. Emma believes it's important to be flexible and creative when teaching. "Not every student learns the same way, and being able to try different strategies to teach is critical to getting through to students," she posits.
In high school, Emma founded and led the Math Club, did peer tutoring, and sang in the school choir. In college, she was a Senior Resident Advisor, as well as a peer tutor and avid hiker; she was also on the dean's list for high academic performance. At Northern Virginia Community College, she was a NOVA Presidential Scholar.
Outside of work Emma can be found reading, knitting and crocheting, and spending time with her cat. Additionally, she enjoys hiking and cooking.
