PrepNow Tutor - Sami S.
Sami has tutored both online and in-person, covering all math topics from algebra to pre-calculus as well as AP Biology. At the College of Dupage, Sami completed general education courses; she then earned a BS in biology from North Central College, where she was a member of the honors organization Phi Theta Kappa and graduated cum laude.
Since graduating, Sami has worked with horses, both training them and maintaining optimal health. "I have grown up around the farm and enjoy working with animals. Each day is different, I never know what my day will turn into," she says. Additionally, Sami tutors high school and middle school students. "Whether it's homework help, preparing for a unit test, or just some extra practice, I create tailored sessions for each of my students to grow and stay motivated."
The Illinois Tutoring Initiative introduced her to tutoring; in this role, she assisted students who fell behind during the pandemic. "My goal was to help students learn how to receive information through an online platform and build back their confidence with academics," she recalls. Since then, Sami has expanded her tutoring to in-person sessions, often meeting at libraries or in students' homes.
Sami's proudest moment as a tutor was with a student who was very nervous about an upcoming test; however, afterwards, the student was elated to report how well it went. "Not only do I work on filling knowledge gaps, but I believe it is important to create confidence in the students so they can perform well on test day," she adds.
As to her tutoring style, Sami keeps lessons interactive. This involves asking the students about their thought process behind a question, which gives students a chance to spot their own errors and offers Sami insight into any weaknesses or learning gaps. "I do not like to give answers to students; I like to prompt them on how to reach the final answer," she explains. Additionally, Sami cultivates a welcoming environment so that they never hesitate to ask questions. "Questions are the most important part of learning!"
Throughout high school and college, Sami competed in eventing with her horse, Wilby. "Wilby and I love cross country, and we go galloping through the fields while jumping over bushes and running through water. This sport has taught me determination, perseverance, and hard work," Sami offers. "Having such a large animal trust you to take them through scary situations is such a privilege."
Outside of work, Sami enjoys music and being outside with her dogs. "Staying active and soaking in the sun is my form of relaxation and mental clarity," she says. Fun fact: her eyes are different colors!
