Chance's Bio

An enthusiastic tutor with expertise in conflict resolution, Chance is a logical problem solver with a passion for helping others. They hold a BA in communication studies with a minor in English from the University of North Texas. Since graduating, they have worked at an elementary school after-school program, completed web development for a small business, and offered freelance editing. In addition to tutoring test prep, they currently work at a preschool-age activity center.

Chance was a peer tutor throughout their education. “My proudest moment as a mentor was when I was running kids' educational activities and this one girl was very nervous and initially didn't want to participate,” Chance shares. “In short, I got the right balance of encouraging participation and respecting her autonomy to make her feel comfortable enough to participate in almost the whole thing, and by the end, she was smiling and had a great time.” This reflects Chance’s tutoring philosophy, regardless of the student’s age: open-minded encouragement and paying attention are vital factors to a welcoming, productive learning environment. Throughout their career, Chance has worked with students up to high school level in math and writing.
“My priority in teaching is to increase confidence,” Chance says. “As someone with anxiety, I know how much worse anxiety can make you perform and how much better you'll do if you're confident in yourself. Stress is a performance killer.” Chance is encouraging, answers all questions without any hint of judgment, and emphasizes strengths while helping with weaknesses. “I also love testing strategies; even if you don't know an answer, a guess doesn't have to be a 1/4 shot, and sometimes you can fully figure it out just by looking at the answer choices,” Chance says. Chance loves teaching test prep in particular because they know how scary big tests can be. “I know that’s half the battle, and I know how to make it less stressful so students can focus on solving instead of worrying,” they say.
As a student, Chance was involved in theater, band, and choir. In college, they were an officer in the Improv Club. They were the recipient of the UNT general academic scholarship and national merit scholar semi-finalists, both for academic performance.

Chance enjoys writing poetry, solving logic puzzles, storm-watching, and sometimes baking. They spend their time on Tumblr and watching people play video games on YouTube. “I have strong critical thinking skills, I'm highly adaptable, and I'm very, very funny,” Chance says.
