PrepNow Tutor - Charis C.
A patient test prep tutor, Charis holds a BA in philosophy and film & media studies from the College of William & Mary. After graduating, she began her career in corporate events planning, but soon found herself drawn to more mission-driven work. She transitioned to a private education agency that partners with schools to provide supplemental academic support to K-12 students, where she offered literacy-intervention coaching to students underperforming on state assessments. Most recently, Charis has worked as an elementary school teacher.
Charis’s first experience teaching was in high school, when she taught piano out of a music store’s practice room. Since this experience, Charis has gone on to tutor college students in essay writing and symbolic logic, K-5 students in phonics and literacy, and middle school students in general academics. As a classroom teacher, Charis has taught foundational math, English, social studies, and science. She loves tutoring test prep because she’s excellent at helping students set and achieve goals, and she’s delivered a 100% rate of improvement on state math and literacy tests
“I want students to understand that learning can be systematic and to understand their role in the process of learning,” Charis explains. “In any subject, the most foundational concepts and processes are the most important. I help students turn that foundation into a scaffold of interrelated concepts and patterns.” Charis believes that this 'scaffold' is stronger than arbitrary fact-finding, allowing students to make quick connections, solve intricate problems, and perform their absolute best.
In high school, Charis was a McKee High School Fellow and participated in the English Honor Society, Ethics Bowl, ESU National Shakespeare Competition, and Cappies NCA. In college, she served as ROCKET Magazine’s editorial director and as a features editor and writer; she also held roles with the Ampersand International Film Festival, Phi Mu, and the Panhellenic Council. She loves to read, write, play music, care for her animals, work out at home, draw, and spend time with family. “I almost majored in Italian in college, and am always excited to learn more and shake the dust off of my language skills!”
