PrepNow Tutor - Marsha H.
A compassionate and dedicated tutor since 1986, Marsha holds an MS in mathematical sciences (statistics) from Clemson University and a BS cum laude in mathematics and business administration (economics) from Meredith College. After graduate school, Marsha spent nine years as a statistician with a defense contractor, a Big Six consulting firm, and a couple of internet start-ups. During her consulting career, she frequently found herself in tutoring roles.
Marsha started tutoring during freshman year in college, working with peers one-on-one, conducting group study sessions, substituting for teachers, and grading papers for the math department. Marsha went on to teach business calculus and statistics as a teaching assistant in graduate school. “After my second child's birth, I entered the homeschooling journey and practiced the art of teaching and creating a love of math in both of my children,” Marsha shares. “Once my children were both teens, I began tutoring again outside the home. I've continued in this manner for the past nine years.” As a private math tutor, Marsha has tutored elementary math, 7th-grade math, pre-algebra, algebra 1 & 2, geometry, pre-calculus, introductory statistics, and SAT math test prep.
"I'm a patient tutor,” Marsha says. “I will go over the material presented by the student as they request. However, in the midst of this discussion, I will spot holes in their understanding and stop to give a quick lesson to fill in the gaps. If warranted, in the next session, I will bring extra material for them to work with to continue to practice with the concept that they have missed along their journey.” Marsha believes that mastering any subject is obtainable given reasonable time and accommodations. “My proudest achievements as a tutor are when I’m able to connect with students and enable them to smile and understand material, when so many enter the relationship with math with such heartache,” Marsha shares.
In high school, Marsha played flute in concert and marching band, took piano lessons, played handbells, sang in the church youth choir, and was a member of the National Honor Society. In college, she was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, continued piano lessons, and practiced aerobics and dumbbell weightlifting. She enjoys Olympic weightlifting, yoga, hiking, and reading.
