PrepNow Tutor - Jesse L.
A student-focused STEM educator, Jesse is excellent at explaining complex concepts in accessible terms, adapting instruction to diverse learning styles, and mentoring students toward academic confidence and success. He holds a BA in chemistry and mathematics from St. Olaf College and an MS in chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology. Jesse worked as a research assistant while in graduate school, exploring liquid dynamics using light-matter interactions. He is currently pursuing his next full-time opportunity while tutoring test prep.
Jesse started tutoring math in high school; in college he worked for three years as an undergraduate laboratory teacher's assistant in general, organic, and physical chemistry. As a graduate student, he taught as a teaching assistant for undergraduate general chemistry, leading classes independently. “My proudest moment as a tutor was helping one of my students get an A on their general chemistry final after they had told me they had wanted to drop out of the class at the beginning of the semester,” Jesse reflects. He also has experience with exam prep during office hours, where he would often help individual students with test-taking strategies.
“I believe everyone has their own learning style and I adapt my teaching style to fit that,” Jesse says. “I believe that to understand the content fully, a student should be guided to the answer by actively engaging with the problem and thinking critically about it.” Jesse loves to ask students what they think and let them reach the correct conclusions on their own, while respecting their capabilities and needs.
As a student, Jesse ran cross country and track and field, and participated in lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, quiz bowl, and hall council. Jesse earned the President’s Fellowship from Georgia Tech as well as the Presidential Scholarship and the Archibald N. Bolstad Endowed Chemistry Scholarship from St. Olaf College; he was also elected the Physical Chemistry Student of the Year. He plays recreational ultimate frisbee and lifts weights with his friends. “I enjoy trying new restaurants around Atlanta and cooking,” Jesse says. “I also enjoy reading and watching TV when I have downtime.” Jesse is originally from Minnesota.
