PrepNow Tutor - Min C.
Min calls himself a hilarious person, though he knows that opinions on such matters can vary. Having earned an AS in psychology from Houston Community College and a BS in psychology from the University of Houston, Min knows that his humor can be one way to appeal to students; however, he is conscious of the need to balance his joviality with empathy and expertise. Min began tutoring through the National Honor Society in high school, working with an array of peers, including AP and honors-level students. He began his professional educational career working as a behavioral technician for children with autism spectrum disorders. From there, Min has worked as a teacher of middle-school reading students and of elementary math students and as a tutor of SAT prep.
Through these years of experience, Min has developed a patient and thorough teaching style. Patience is required, he posits, as “learning mastery inherently requires practice, failure, and correction.” In order to enable students to embrace a system that actually encourages failures of a sort, Min has to be thorough to understand and appeal to his students on an individual level. For Min, it is crucial that students feel as if their particular needs and learning styles are valued and feel as if Min, therefore, should cater to them. He believes that “no number of drills or amount of rote memorization will lead to enjoyment or true retention of material; that only comes through student buy-in, something I am conscious to foster.”
Outside of the classroom, Min has long been a student of dance, having once been a professional dancer and the captain of a hip-hop crew. While he still has some moves, he has also become quite a devotee of media, particularly serialized titles: among his favorite TV and film franchises are the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Harry Potter, and Naruto; he also likes to play expansive video game series such as Final Fantasy.
