PrepNow Tutor - Alyx H.
Alyx has many years of experience tutoring elementary math and all topics, grades 3-12. She earned a bachelor's degree in health and human performance from McNeese State University in 2022. She is currently working toward a DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) at Texas Women's University; she aims to graduate in May 2027. She has worked full-time/PRN (since starting PT school) for six years at a long-term psychiatric facility. She also works at a physical therapy facility and tutors test prep while finishing her DPT.
Alyx began tutoring when her mom, a teacher, was struggling with a particular student. "My mom found that he reminded her a lot of me when I was his age. We both have ADHD, so I had more patience with him because I know how it feels," she recalls. Alyx has worked with students ever since, tutoring elementary school students in math and helping kids in her workplace with their homework.
She's proud to see students overcome learning obstacles. "One of the kids I tutored was scared he would get held back due to his F in math," Alyx shares. "By the end of our first semester working together, he brought his F up to a B!" He and his mom cried when they found out.
As to her teaching style, Alyx likes to build rapport one-on-one by focusing on the students' interests and finding common ground during sessions. "To uncover student weaknesses and misconceptions, I like to ask students what they feel is hard for them as well as see them attempt problems in that trouble area they identified," she shares. "As we work through other problems, I can see if that is also something they struggle with."
In high school, Alyx played basketball, and in college, she was regularly on the dean's list.
These days, Alyx enjoys anything outdoors. "I like to play just about any sport, lift weights, and run," she says. "On rainy days, I enjoy watching a movie."
