A passionate educator, Ethan holds a BA in economics from Occidental College. Since graduating, he has taught math at a learning center. “I started tutoring my sophomore year of college because I loved working with younger students,” Ethan says. “My proudest moment was seeing a student who was well behind grade level and hated his tutoring lessons slowly turn into a bright mathematician who looked forward to his lessons.” Throughout his career, Ethan has tutored test prep and all levels of math, including geometry, algebra, and calculus.
“Tutoring test prep in particular excites me because I will be able to help students transform their knowledge into results and get into their dream colleges,” Ethan says. When first working with students, Ethan prioritizes building up their fundamentals in order to help them understand and break down larger and more difficult problems. “I think that often students can get so caught up in the final result that they lose track of the learning that is required to reach their goal,” he says. “My teaching style places a larger emphasis on that learning, so the students can earn their results through hard and earnest work.”
Ethan describes himself as a caring and focused tutor. “I’m quick to connect with the students and attempt to motivate them by appealing to their desire to learn,” Ethan says. “I think this is the best way to get a student to start enjoying their lessons rather than dreading them. I think education is incredibly important, and, therefore, it is incredibly important to do it correctly. The only way to get a student to perform their best is by being a compassionate teacher.” Students that Ethan has tutored have seen quick results, and he loves watching them go from feeling hesitant about a subject to confident in school. “It is also amazing to see students grow and find a love of learning.”
As a student, Ethan participated in cross country, golf, and debate. He loves video games and nerdy things like Dungeons and Dragons; and he loves to be active through biking and kayaking. Ethan had two pet guinea pigs growing up. “I also have a dog, and I take care of a lizard!”
