PrepNow Tutor - Katrina B.
Katrina counts herself lucky to have already had a rich career in education. She holds associate’s degrees in business administration and childhood development from Cincinnati State College and both a BA in early childhood education and an MA in reading science from Mount Saint Joseph University. She has worked continuously in education and childhood development since 2014 and has been a teacher since 2017. As a teacher, she has taught students in reading, writing, science, social studies, language arts, math, homework help, test prep, and study skills. In the math arena, she has specifically taught number sense, arithmetic, problem solving, word problems, algebra, and calculus. In addition, she worked for three years with third graders on state testing and has worked since 2022 with middle-school students on that same state testing and on ACT and SAT test-prep. Finally, she has worked in administration as a director of academics since 2024.
In the breadth of her academic roles, Katrina has always held that her role is to serve students’ needs. She believes that students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and confident, so she endeavors to build trust and encouragement before moving with students into challenging academic work. Her approach in such academic pursuits includes guided practice, step-by-step problem solving, hands-on activities, and learning through games, when appropriate. She argues, “In these ways, I help students talk through their thinking, build independence, and develop stronger academic skills in ways that feel meaningful and encouraging.”
Ultimately, Katrina’s approach has clearly borne fruit, as she has flourished in the classroom and then transitioned into an influential administrative role. Indeed, in her dual roles, she helped usher her school to state-wide rating recognition (the school went from a 2.5 to a 3.5 rating) and also to earn the Momentum Award, presented to schools that demonstrate exemplary improvement in achievement and growth. These honors and the many lives that Katrina has affected testify to her ongoing contributions to education.
Outside of work, Katrina enjoys artists such as Monet and Van Gogh, abstract and impressionist artists in general, and new artists like Tavares Strachan. She also likes travelling to beaches, historical places, and cultural destinations. Finally, she revels in all things sci-fi, including Star Wars, Marvel, and Stranger Things.
