PrepNow Tutor - Amanda J.
A passionate educator, Amanda holds a BA in secondary education with an emphasis in English from the University of Nevada, Reno, and an MEd in educational technologies with an emphasis in K-12 classroom from Northern Arizona University. Amanda has been teaching English at the middle school and high school levels since 2012. Through her previous district, Amanda completed over 60 hours of training and professional development focusing on the ACT. She also has experience scoring standardized writing assessments, having scored the Nevada High School Writing Proficiency the last 5 years it was used.
“I have always wanted to be a teacher,” Amanda shares. She notes that her proudest moment as a teacher is whenever she sees students truly understand something. “I was covering a math class (algebra), and the lesson was on factoring polynomials,” Amanda says, recalling the specific day this happened. “When I explained it, there was a moment when I saw the light bulbs all turn on and the lesson truly made sense.” Throughout her career, Amanda has taught high school and middle school English language arts and tutored students for the ACT and SAT.
“When it comes to teaching and tutoring, I like for the students to lead the way,” Amanda says. “I want to be the guide, and I don't want to spend all the time focusing on something the student(s) are comfortable with. I have this style because I want to make sure that the learning is valuable and relevant.” Amanda notes that if a student is very comfortable with summarizing text but struggles with figuring out the meaning of words in context, then it makes more sense to focus on figuring out the meaning of words in context than on summarizing the reading. “I also believe that students are capable of doing anything and that sometimes, they just need a little push to get going in the right direction,” Amanda says.
In high school, Amanda played lacrosse. She loves to read and reads about two books a week, and enjoys going to the shore in the summer. “I love nerdy things,” she says. Amanda is a 3rd-generation native of Las Vegas, NV.
