PrepNow Tutor - Andrew T.
Andrew calls himself a patient and reflective teacher who enjoys listening to and learning about his students. He holds BAs in English and secondary education from Loyola University of Chicago, graduating cum laude with honors. While completing his degree, Andrew worked as a student teacher at two different high schools, where he taught English and ACT test prep and tutored students in algebra. Thereafter, like many educators, he cut his teeth as a long-term and general substitute teacher before taking a full-time position as a high-school teacher. He is excited at the prospect of being able to help even more students via his role at StudyPoint.
Andrew’s approach to instruction begins with a casual, conversational attitude. He feels it is crucial to sincerely listen to his students and respond as authentically as possible to how they feel. He says, “I ask students what is on their minds when they see a problem and help them decide how they can turn their thoughts into direct, actionable steps to solve the problem.” In doing so, Andrew finds that students are more responsible to themselves and are more apt to find the success that both he and they desire. He summarizes, “I believe that when it comes to education, the most important thing you can do for students is give them the tools to solve a problem for themselves, not just explain answers to them.”
A fun fact about Andrew is that he is only three degrees apart from Hall of Fame baseballer Joe DiMaggio. While perhaps not as notable an athlete as his distant relation, Andrew did participate in track and field while in high school, and he was also a member of the chess club, musical productions, and a cappella performances.
These days, Andrew likes taking walks in parks with his notebook, writing out his thoughts when the mood strikes him. Finally, he is also a huge board-game fan, and he collects as many as he thinks will make for a fun afternoon with friends.
