PrepNow Tutor - Jaric S.
Jaric is a teacher, author, literary editor, and occasional coder with over 6 years of educational experience. He has tutored English (general and composition) and math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus) with middle school to college-level students. Hailing from California, Japan, and the Philippines, he is adept at working with learners from various backgrounds and abilities.
He earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Alabama, where he was a teaching assistant and writing tutor; he also holds a BA in literature and writing from the University of California, San Diego, and an AA in computer science from Southwestern College.
Jaric began tutoring at a community college when he was 19, but his proudest moment came 9 years later at age 28. After teaching a semester of creative writing, a few students gave him thank-you cards. “They wrote about how much I inspired them to write and how I helped them figure out who they are and what they want to do. You can't ask for more as a teacher,” he reflects.
Jaric’s approach is supportive and adaptive. “I believe in guiding the student to the answer,” he says. With an eye for fundamentals and critical thinking skills, he relies on his skills as a writer and editor to teach process over product. “I create a safe and comfortable environment in which students aren't afraid to make mistakes and can subsequently learn from them,” he adds.
Jaric is proud to share that his writing has been published in numerous literary journals and he was named a three-time finalist for the University of Alabama's creative writing contests. In March 2026, he was also named a finalist for the Disquiet International Literary Prize, based in Lisbon, Portugal. He is also co-creator and editor for two professional projects: a web-based novel and a literary magazine issue.
When he’s not writing or tutoring, he enjoys tabletop gaming, particularly role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering; board games such as Forest Shuffle, Cascadia, and Catan; and classic video games like Mario and Final Fantasy. He also enjoys watching anime with his beloved “Halloween cats”—one is black, and the other is orange.
