PrepNow Tutor - David K.
A kind-hearted and energetic tutor, David holds a BS in biological chemistry from the University of Dayton and an MS and PhD in biochemistry from the University of Michigan. His career has been focused on medical and cancer research, and he currently works in the Department of Radiation Oncology as a staff scientist and manager of a research facility that houses equipment for radiation-related research. David has also worked as a private tutor to high school and college students for over ten years.
David started tutoring friends in high school who were struggling with chemistry. “This evolved into small group sessions with a whiteboard and me helping friends review and learn science and math concepts before exams,” David recalls. Throughout his tutoring career, he has taught ACT and SAT prep, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, and statistics. “I love to make students feel comfortable through humor and learning about their goals and passions in life,” David says.
“My teaching style is to find connections between the student's interests and the material and use metaphors and commonalities to make connections,” David explains. He uses a Socratic approach to guide students through problem solving, first modeling examples and then encouraging students to work through problems on their own. By asking thoughtful, targeted questions, David identifies knowledge gaps and invites students to explain their thinking and demonstrate solutions, helping build both understanding and confidence.
As a student, David played intramural softball, flag football, and basketball. He received numerous honors, including inclusion in the University of Michigan Summer Research Opportunities Program and the Outstanding Mentor Award; he has published numerous scholarly articles in the basic science and cancer biology fields.
David is an avid nature lover and enjoys time in the mountains and forests. He loves to cook and eat new foods and enjoys time at the gym and riding his bike. “I became a celebrity on a cruise ship by singing Eminem songs at karaoke with my step-daughter,” David shares. “If money weren't a consideration, you'd find me touring the national parks and finding the best spots to eat interesting food.”
