PrepNow Tutor - Scott M.
Scott’s success in business is pronounced enough that he did not need to begin tutoring to make a difference in his community. He holds a BS in business administration, with specializations in human resources management and economics, from Ohio State University, and he has parlayed that degree into a decorated career in contract and program management. Among his honors in business are becoming a member of the IBM Hundred Percent Club, and being named subcommittee chair of marketing, public relations, and technology. While earning these accolades, Scott has also been active as a volunteer tutor in his community. In fact, he has given so generously of his time that he earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Eventually, he became a tutor for StudyPoint in 2014.
Scott credits his upbringing as the reason he feels drawn to education. “My mother was a teacher,” he says, “and I learned from her how to mentor others.” The mentoring style he learned is centered on flexibility. He believes that one must decipher how each student best learns and adapt tutoring to that style. He also knows that adaptability to physical environments is an often-overlooked element that can yield positive gains with students. As such, he is proud to have met students at school, in-home, at coffee shops, at libraries, online—anywhere that the student feels most comfortable or finds the most convenient—knowing that simply meeting with a student on their terms can build confidence and trust. Once that rapport is established, Scott argues, he can foster “a growth mindset and continuous, mutual learning.”
Outside of the office and the classroom (or the coffee shop or library), Scott enjoys many outdoor activities. Though no longer the varsity goalie or the pole vaulter and hurdler that he was in his youth, he is still a rabid Ohio State football fan. In addition, he enjoys camping with friends and family. An observant motorist might see him and his family smiling in their travel trailer on the way to a remote weekend getaway.
