PrepNow Tutor - Feaven G.
Feaven grew up with a yen to learn and to help others academically, and she has followed those pursuits as she has advanced. Thus, following a stint as a peer STEM tutor for her high-school classmates, Feaven earned a BS in public health services from the University of Michigan and an MPH in global epidemiology from Emory University. While she completed her undergraduate degree, Feaven fed her love of mentorship by working as a student facilitator, assisting new college students to acclimate to the community and to set academic, career, and personal goals. She also established a showcase for students of the program, allowing them to present their portfolios and garner more feedback on their progress. Next, in graduate school, Feaven helped educate young adults in her community by creating mental-health materials regarding common illnesses, treatment, and self-care mechanisms. Overall, Feaven's unique and varied experiences allow her to appeal well to the breadth of StudyPoint students.
Feaven believes in an academic approach that forwards student application of concepts: she demonstrates or explains a technique or idea and then encourages students to begin to demonstrate what she has modeled. As she does so, she asks students to express their thoughts and detail their processes. She finds that this method places responsibility on the students themselves while simultaneously allowing her to adapt guidance to student ways of thinking. Ultimately, she knows that students who are engaged in their own learning and who know that their thoughts are valued will believe in her and the process. She says, “It is crucial to build trust with students, fostering an environment in which they feel comfortable to make mistakes, ask questions, and gain clarity on a concept—multiple times if needed.” If she succeeds in this goal, Feaven believes, she and the student are set up to adapt to each other’s needs and thrive together.
In her spare time, Feaven has always been an active member of her community, volunteering for multiple organizations and causes. She also played tennis and was part of the robotics team in high school. In addition, Feaven is a musician who can play classical strains on the violin but admits to loving the simplicity of the kazoo. Finally, these days, she still likes to play tennis and enjoys simply being outdoors, but she might also spend a quieter day at home baking or watching a good movie.
